SCOPE · Making Social Growth Visible

A research-based assessment that measures seven essential social and emotional skills in students across Grades 2 to 5, making it clear where a child is thriving and where they have room to grow.

Why SCOPE?

In a world increasingly shaped by technology, the skills that set students apart are the most human ones.

An edge in the age of AI

As technology takes on more of the routine work, it is the deeply human skills, empathy, communication, and good judgment, that will set students apart.

Skills that shape a life

How children read emotions, build friendships, and bounce back from setbacks shapes how they do in school and far beyond it.

Teachable, and worth measuring

Research from CASEL and McKown (2017) shows these skills can be grown, especially when we take the time to see them clearly.

The growth we usually miss

Reading and math are checked constantly, but a child's growth in kindness, listening, and character too often goes unseen.

Progress, not comparison

SCOPE celebrates each child's journey on a clear developmental scale instead of ranking them against their classmates.

Support where it counts

Making social growth visible helps teachers and families nurture these skills with the same care as any core subject.

Inside the Assessment

Real sample items from the instrument. Questions come in four formats (picture, story, open response, and self-rating) so every child can show what they know.
Pick a SCOPE, then reveal the keyed answer on any question
Section A · Picture (Grades 4-5)
Assessment picture

Look at the picture and choose what emotion this student is having.

AJust angry
BDetermined but also frustrated
CReally excited
DJust sad
What we look for: Picture items check whether a child can read nuanced, mixed emotions, not just the obvious one.
Section D · All About Me (self-rating, 1-4)

“When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I can use multiple strategies to help myself calm down and refocus.”

Not like me at all
A little like me
Somewhat like me
Yes, a lot like me!
What we look for: Self-ratings map directly onto the four developmental levels and capture how the child sees their own regulation.

How Scoring Works

SCOPE reports growth on a four-level developmental scale. It is a snapshot of where a learner is right now, not a pass/fail grade.
The four developmental levels
Level 1
Emerging
Level 2
Developing
Level 3
Proficient
Level 4
Advanced
